Am I responsible for my spouse’s debts after divorce?
Debt division is one aspect common to many divorces, but it will work differently for each divorcing couple, since your debt is not always the same as others’. When you get married, you may assume certain debts that your spouse has, but this does not necessarily mean that you are to be held fully responsible for your spouse’s debt if you get divorced. For any debt that you two shared, such as property purchases, you will have to divide this debt evenly. On the other hand, debt that was brought individually to a marriage or accrued individually and is not shared might not be your responsibility upon divorce.
