Children of divorced parents are more prone to changing their religions or not practicing any kind of religion altogether, a study by a Baylor University sociologist that appeared in the Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion showed.
According to assistant professor of sociology in Waco, Texas-based Baylor’s College of Arts and Sciences Jeremy Uecker, who is also the lead author of the study, having divorced parents can cause children to become non-religious.
Uecker said that since a divorced parent may find it uncomfortable to attend church gatherings for fear of being stigmatized, it can cause religion as an experience to not be introduced as central to the life of the child, and thus, the child will not deem it important when he becomes an adult.
